The New American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card

8 November 2011

As many of you know, I am an avid collector of AIR MILES reward miles; I just cannot get enough of it. I collect AIR MILES when I pump up my gas and even when I go to the drug store. American Express Canada (AMEX) has refreshed their AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card, allowing Card members to earn more AIR MILES rewards miles on their everyday purchases.

It brings great joy to report to everyone that we at BankNerd have been given the opportunity to test drive (technically test shop) the New American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card and share our experience with you.

What does the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card offer?

The American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card is a great credit card that allows me to collect AIR MILES reward miles at a great rate.

Below you will find a table that showcases how you can earn AIR MILES with the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card:

1 reward miles for every $10 Purchases have to be made at AIR MILES Sponsors and NOW on other eligible everyday purchases at gas, grocery and
1 reward miles for every $15 Purchases made everywhere else

As you can see, your AIR MILES reward miles earn rate is the best you can get. What makes this credit card great is that you can now earn AIR MILES reward miles on gas, grocery and drugstore purchases- even if they’re not AIR MILES sponsors.

This means you are able to now collect AIR MILES reward miles faster than ever before. Yes, I was super excited about this news.

With the new American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card you also receive a 500 welcome bonus AIR MILES reward miles and the annual fee is being waived for the first year. That is a savings of $65!

Another great introductory offer AMEX is providing is a special interest rate of 2.99% for the first 12 months of card membership; all you need to do is ensure that you make your minimum monthly payments on time.

What is the difference between AMEX and my other AIR MILES rewards miles provider?

What I like about this Card compared to AIR MILES Cards I’ve had in the past is the higher earn rate on every day spending. With my other AIR MILES Credit Card, I only earn 1 AIR MILES reward mile/ $15 I spend. They offer double AIR MILES at Shell locations and car rentals at National Car Rental and Alamo, but the amount I spend at the grocery store, drugstore and other gas stations outweighs this benefit. On top of that, the annual fee for my new Card is lower than my old one ($65 vs. $99) and I get the first year free!

The American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card can help me earn AIR MILES faster , especially when you consider the fact that they are giving a welcome bonus of 500 AIR MILES reward miles.

Being a card member with AMEX also brings about additional benefits that I did not have before, which includes:

  • Front Of The Line access for sought-after concerts, shows and events. [Editor’s Note: Came in handy when buying my Kings of Leon Tickets last month, I should ask for a box from AMEX next time.]
  • The accelerated AIR MILES reward miles through purchasing at eligible gas, grocery and drugstores is a huge plus [Editor’s Note: I for one am going to collect a lot more points through this new point system]

Over the next couple of months I plan on test-driving the new American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card, and I will report my experience using it. My goal is to earn as many AIR MILES as I can and hopefully use it towards a “well-deserved” trip in December. In all seriousness I will end up just buying something digital, maybe a TV!

they recently called me and told me I was pre-approved to upgrade to this card from the free one, and I told them first that I don’t think I’ll be able to earn back the $65 annual fee with the extra miles. The lady said if I change my mind, I can switch back whenever I want, so I said deal! The most attractive offer here is that I can go to other gas stations and continue to earn the 1/$10 rate.

Now my question is, what (gas station) companies are they referring to? I figure they mean all the big chains.. Such as Petro Canada, Esso, and the new company Husky.

My other question is, wouldn’t we still be earning faster at Shell? Since you pay with the credit card AND swipe the air miles card?

Please be aware that points are awarded on a per-purchase basis. For example, I spent 29.90 at a non-sponsor and got only one Airmile for the first $15. The other 14.50 gets lost. I spent almost 350.00 for the month and got only 8 airmiles. A return of only 1 Airmile per $40 spent, by far the worst I have ever gotten from an Airmiles credit card. If you make many small purchases of less than $10 (or less than $15 at a non-sponsor), you will get ripped off as you will never get a single Airmile from those small purchases.
