The Basics of Buying Auto Insurance Online

16 September 2010

We don’t all do it, but we probably should. Every few years we should be comparing car insurance quotes to see if we’re paying too much. These days, the best and most efficient way to do that is online. Getting some quote comparisons might take an hour or two but will be well worth the work in the end, with significant discounts out there for the taking.

One of the most important things to do when comparing insurance online is knowing what coverage you want and need, and also to get the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and mileage from any vehicles you’re looking to insure. These pieces of information are essential for getting accurate quotes from multiple sources. If you’re not sure of your car’s VIN, it can usually be found on a small metal plate in the lower corner of your car’s windshield. Knowing what coverage you want is a little bit trickier to figure out, but a good place to start is always your current policy. There are minimum requirements for auto insurance in every state, but you’ll probably want more than the minimum if you can afford it, as it can save you lots of money, hassle, and even lawsuits in the case of an accident. Some quick searches online will get you a lot of great info on what coverage is best for your situation.

Once you have your ideal coverage, VIN number, and mileage, you’re ready to shop. There are two main ways to shop for auto insurance online, through major insurer’s sites or through more expansive car insurance “comparison” sites. I recommend a little of both to get the best results. The large insurance companies will usually be more easily customized, and even offer competitor quotes, but sometimes there are smaller, more affordable rates to be found through the comparison sites. You may not know the name, but some of the smaller companies are even cheaper, friendlier, and easier to deal with than the big boys

As with everything on the internet, be careful with your personal information. When comparing insurance quotes online, always be sure you’re on a secure page (an “https” url and the little lock icon in your browser) before you fill out any forms, and don’t follow a link from an email unless you’re sure of its origin.

Hopefully these few tips will help you be safe, compare accurately, and save big on your auto insurance.
