RBC Branch Bombed by Activists [VIDEO]

20 May 2010

Early Tuesday morning a bombing occurred at a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) branch in Ottawa. The aftermath of this explosion has caused the tone for both the G8 summit and G20 summit to change as the perpetrators have already made it clear they plan to attend these meetings.

The attack took place around 3:30 am and luckily enough, no one was hurt in the explosion.

It has come to the authority’s attention that there were at least 3 people who took part in this act of terrorism. In a video, which was shot by the perpetrators, it showed two people leaving the bank as it exploded while another was shooting the film diagonally across the street

The group behind this attack is FFFC – Ottawa, an indigenous activist group.

The activist group decided it would be a great idea to not only film the event. They also uploaded the event onto the internet. The video goes a bit more in depth and provides their reasons for why they attacked RBC.

From the video it looks like they conducted the attack because RBC was a major sponsor in the 2010 Olympics, which took place in British Columbia. These activists noted that the land used was not something that should have been taking from them and as such they have taken action. Obviously, the way they dealt with the matter was not very productive.

The violence that arupted reminds me of the following quote from Mahatma Gandhi:

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent

It is frightening to think that this can happen right here in Canada and with the recent news of these people are going to be at the G20/G8 summit meetings, it could become more terrifying.

I cannot imagine what they might do in Toronto (specifically Huntsville, Ontario), where the G20 summit is being held. Toronto is home to many bank headquarters, and this kind of behavior does not seem like it will stop at the bombing of the RBC branch.

The damage done is estimated to be $300,000.

I am appalled to see this sort of action being done in order for the FFFC to get attention. It does not do anything for anyone to do these sort of acts, it only affects those not involved, causing fear and panic to occur.

Hopefully nothing like this happens at any of the summit meetings, however at this point we have no idea what the FFFC will do.

What are your views on this? What ways could the FFFC do better to get there voices heard?
