Credit Card Match 11: AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card VS NBC Platinum MasterCard

29 September 2009

Untitled 150x150 Credit Card Match 11: AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card VS NBC Platinum MasterCardWe have reached the second match in the tier 2 matches; today’s match is definitely one that should not be missed.

We have in the blue corner the AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card and in the red corner we have the NBC Platinum MasterCard.

These two contestants have fought their way to their position, but only one will be able to make its way to the top.

As usual, the matches will be judged based on three categories, which provides the better rewards program, travel benefits and the best bonus offers.

The AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card makes the first move with giving you the ability of earning 1.25 Miles for every $1 purchase up to $25,000 and 1.5 Miles for every $1 purchase for every $25,000.

The NBC Platinum MasterCard counters by offering 1.5 reward points for every $1 you spend. The first 11,000 points will allow you to have $100 off any flight; 50,000 reward points will give you a $500 travel discount. After redeeming 50,000 reward points, every 10,000 reward points will give you $100 travel discount.

Considering that you are able to earn 1.5 reward points for the NBC Platinum MasterCard constantly, compared to the AMEX Aeroplan Platinum Plus Card, the winner is without a doubt the NBC Platinum MasterCard.

With the NBC Platinum MasterCard you can choose your own travel agency, the airline of your choice and take advantage of last minute deals. You get great travel insurance, which includes out of province residence medical insurance (54 and under, max 60 days coverage), trip interruption insurance, flight delay insurance and baggage insurance.

The AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card offers trip cancellation insurance, emergency medical –maximum of 15 consecutive days, auto rental collision, baggage insurance, access to Air Canada Executive First/ Executive Class priority airport check in and access to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge located at over 500 Airport Lounges across the globe.

This is definitely a tough decision but with both credit cards offering the same insurance coverage, I would find that having more days of medical insurance more important than access to Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges or priority check in.

The winner of this category is therefore the NBC Platinum MasterCard.

In the final category, the AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card offers a bonus of 15,000 miles, which can be used for a short haul flight.

The NBC Platinum MasterCard does not fall short, as it offers a free ticket to Paris, London or Orlando with the purchase of a full fare ticket.

Both of these bonus offers are great, however the winner would have to be the NBC Platinum MasterCard; although the choices might be little, it does give you a free ticket compared to a short haul flight.

The winner of this match without a doubt is the NBC Platinum MasterCard. This was a shutout, but the AMEX Aeroplan Plus Platinum Card was able to compete, however it only fell short by a little.
